Solomon Islands: Asia Pacific Region: Weekly Regional Humanitarian Snapshot (9 - 15 April 2014)

SOLOMON ISLANDS

Twelve days after severe flooding devastated Honiara and greater Guadalcanal, around 9,000 people remain displaced in Honiara, and over 50,000 people are affected with 21 confirmed deaths. Government relief efforts continue with the support of partners. The Government is fast-tracking food and water relief from Monday, 14 Apr. Source: OCHA ROP

On 13 Apr, two large earthquakes struck in the same area off Makira Province. There was localised inundation reported in some areas, however an aerial survey found no serious impact. Source: OCHA ROP

MYANMAR

Following the 26-27 Mar civil unrest that caused severe damage to NGO and UN offices, warehouses, and living quarters in Sittwe, a large number of staff remain outside Rakhine state. UN agencies and INGOs are working with national authorities to meet the urgent needs of vulnerable communities, including food, water, sanitation, nutrition and health services. Source: OCHA Myanmar

Conflict between the Myanmar Army and the Kachin Independence Army erupted on 10 Apr in southern Kachin State, affecting several villages. About 3,600 individuals, resident in four IDP camps, are in close vicinity to the fighting. Heavy fighting continues in close proximity to camps and villages with reports of affected people fleeing towards the Chinese border. Local NGOs are leading the response to the situation and have appealed for assistance. Source: OCHA Myanmar

PAPUA NEW GUINEA

On 11 Apr, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Torikina and Buin on Bougainville Island. The quake caused one death and moderate damage to houses and infrastructure. Together with NGOs, the Provincial Disaster Centre is conducting an initial rapid assessment. The National Disaster Committee has called an ad-hoc Disaster Management Team meeting on 15 Apr to discuss joint response actions. Source: OCHA ROAP/USGS/NDC

Tropical Cyclone Ita affected about 54,500 people and damaged over 1,150 houses and crops. The Provincial Disaster Centre distributed relief supplies, including food, water, tarpaulins and medicines. An aerial survey from 15 to 17 Apr will identify further response actions. Source: NDC/NWS

PHILIPPINES

A Low Pressure Area is approaching areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Haiyan. The weather system is being closely monitored by the Government. The National Disaster Reduction and Management Council issued a General Flood Advisory to the local authorities in the eastern Visayas for further dissemination. Source: NDRRMC/OCHA Philippines
